X FACTOR judge Ronan Keating has caused a stir by telling teen contestant Reece Mastin that he doesn't need to go to school.
Keating told 16-year-old Mastin he didn’t need to return to high school after performing a version of Alanis Morissette’s Ironic on last night’s '90s-themed live performance show.
“Are you planning on going back to school if things don’t work out on X Factor?” Keating asked Mastin after the performance.
“I don’t want to,” Mastin responded.
“Mate, you don’t need to,” Keating said. “This is your home. You belong on the stage. I was 16 when I started in this business.”
Mastin has been pegged as an early favourite to win the Channel 7 talent show.
Earlier this year Australia's Got Talent winner Jack Vidgen, 14, quit high school to become the next Justin Bieber, but he continues to study via distance education.
